A loss in Culture, Olympia Stays Strong

If you were to walk around downtown Olympia, at any time, I almost guarantee that the thought of how weird some of the people are would cross your mind on numerous occasions. Yet, if you were to focus, you would see that the music and art, is a never sleeping beast the fills the streets. With many venues around the historic waterfront, community members from all over Thurston County come to listen to local music of all genres.

If you find this irrelevant, I suggest you reconsider. If you think about larger cities such as Seattle, Portland, or even Los Angeles, it’s obvious that their music scenes are much larger. But how many people per capita attend and listen to the local music. With programs such as iTunes and amazon, the Internet has allowed an altered view of music in societies that does not support the term “artist”.

Thus, in the 21st century, people don’t get the same enjoyment out of searching for new and original music that once existed. This is why larger cities with massive advertising seem to be obsessed with mainstream music. People find it “hip” to like what everyone else likes. Now back to Olympia, the smaller size and the absence of large scale radio productions and television advertisements, opens the human brain for curiosity.

People want to get out and listen to the local music instead of downloading lower quality mp3, that flood the listeners mind.

  1. I see a big change in this blog! Your title is still related to the blog. I like the orignal one as well.

In regards to the content, you stated the the music scene in bigger cities are much larger. Do you think that you can find a statistic to show that? That would be really interesting!

Your voice really puts on a defense mode for Olympia!

Just a curiousity like the first blog, how do you think the visuals tie into the blog?

    Your grammer seems just fine!

  2. Wow, your blog is great. The structure around the photos is well done, and your background is interesting. Though, because of how busy the background is, you might want to make your text stand out a little more, make it bigger or something.
Your topic is wonderful, if people shop locally and promote local businesses, why not listen and promote local music? This is truly a blog with a great message.

  3. "But how many people per capita.." needs a question mark.

Great point to this post, but the first time I read through it, I was expecting another paragraph. I'm not sure what I thought it would say, but something a little more powerful about the conclusion that the culture of Olympia fosters greater wealth in the local music scene.

Maybe when we add stuff like interviews, you can get more of an "on the street" approach? This topic is absolutely important to explore. Good job!

  4. Great post, I really liked this. I would be interested to know whether or not the smaller number of followers in a smaller city (i.e. Oly versus Seattle) has a more loyal fan-base or not. But terrific job. :)
