A loss in Culture, Olympia Stays Strong

If you were to walk around downtown Olympia, at any time, I almost guarantee that the thought of how weird some of the people are would cross your mind on numerous occasions. Yet, if you were to focus, you would see that the music and art, is a never sleeping beast the fills the streets. With many venues around the historic waterfront, community members from all over Thurston County come to listen to local music of all genres.

If you find this irrelevant, I suggest you reconsider. If you think about larger cities such as Seattle, Portland, or even Los Angeles, it’s obvious that their music scenes are much larger. But how many people per capita attend and listen to the local music. With programs such as iTunes and amazon, the Internet has allowed an altered view of music in societies that does not support the term “artist”.

Thus, in the 21st century, people don’t get the same enjoyment out of searching for new and original music that once existed. This is why larger cities with massive advertising seem to be obsessed with mainstream music. People find it “hip” to like what everyone else likes. Now back to Olympia, the smaller size and the absence of large scale radio productions and television advertisements, opens the human brain for curiosity.

People want to get out and listen to the local music instead of downloading lower quality mp3, that flood the listeners mind.
